A survey of Jewish life in Köln from the Roman period to the present. Pp. 35-46 discuss the medieval period, including the persecution and expulsion of Jews during the Black Death epidemic beginning in 1349. No Jews lived in Köln for the next 400 years. The 19th century was characterized by opposing trends: hope for emancipation as well as antisemitic outrages, among them the blood libel of Xanten in 1892. Pp. 121-206 deal with the Nazi period. Discusses the process of Aryanization, the activities of the Kulturbund, the \"Kristallnacht\" pogrom, the Yavne Jewish high school, headed by Erich Klibansky, who prepared the students for emigration (he was deported to Minsk in 1942, after having rescued 130 children). Between 1941-45, 11,000 Jews were deported from Köln. Includes the story of Katharina Overath (née Meier), who saved the Bernauer family from deportation and was recognized by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Gentile. Includes numerous photographs and facsimiles, as well as inserts on specific sites connected with Jews in Köln.
