Zilcken printed as proofs on Japanese as well as an extra suite of the original etchings printed on Chinese paper, all 48 original etchings SIGNED in pencil by PH. ZILCKEN, all 24 photogravures also printed in a suite as proofs on Chinese paper. Exceptional complete set! The set contains in total 48 biographies by contemporary specialists.of Dutch painters with an emphasis on 19th-20th century and the Haagsche School, such as Jozef Israëls, Henriëtte Ronner, J.H. Weissenbruch, Jacob Maris, Matthijs Maris, August Allebé, Albert Neuhuys, H.W, Mesdag, L.F. Apol, Thérèse Schwartze, Anton Mauve, W.B. Tholen. In 1901 a fifth volume was published on Belgian artists (not included). The fragile vellum-paper dustjackets are quite heavily damaged with large tears/ folds and sections lacking, which is almost inevitable with this material and such a heavy book; weakly bound with quires loosening. Internally the set is in very fine condition. |
