Aulard was the first professional French historian of the French Revolution and of Napoleon and appointed professor of the history of the French Revolution at the Sorbonne in 1885. His major achievement was to institutionalise and professionalise the practice of history in France and he was the author of the work The French Revolution, a Political History, 1789-1804 (1910, 4 vols.). Created after the great insurrection of 10 August 1792, it was the first French government organized as a republic, abandoning the monarchy altogether. |
