| Meer info | = An extremely rare volume of this important periodical, created to inform Protestant missionaries of current goings-on in China as well as providing historical and cultural contexts. Rare in any condition. We also hold vol. XV of the series (in all 20 volumes were published). Contains 2 plates: "Specimen of Mr. Dyer's type" and "Specimen of Chinese Divisible Type". Two leaves (p.163-166 lower corner torn off with loss of a few words. "The Chinese Repository", the world's first major journal concerned with Chinese culture, language, history and politics. The Repository was edited by Elijah Coleman Bridgman (1801 - 1861), an early Protestant missionary who arrived in China in 1830, prior to the Opium War. Bridgman was the first American "China expert"; in addition to editing the Repository he wrote a history of the United States in Chinese, and as a translator worked with the Chinese government on the first treaty between the US and China. |
