(foliated pages, last folio incorrectly numbered 127, should be 131) + index, worn binding with scratched covers and damages hinges, title page weak and with a library stamp (Warmbrunn), first and last few pages stained, heraldic woodcut on title page (heraldic crest of Friesland), some decorative woodcut elements (initials and endpiece), illustrated with two woodcut coats-of-arms of Friesland, an engraved portrait of the author (by Pieter Feddes of Harlingen, 1586-1623) and 53 etchings, good impressions.l Hamconius (1550?-1610) was (substitute-) grietman of Lemsterland and Doniawerstal in Friesland and chose the Spanish side during the Dutch Revolt, which forced him to leave Friesland afterwards. This book is his main work, first published in 1609 (3rd edition in 1623). The reprints are illustrated with 53 impressive full page etched full body portraits of the counts and lords of Friesland and their coat-of-arms, with decorative margins, a landscape in the background with some scenes related to their person. |
