Preface
World Press Photo: New Stories is a showcase for the power of visual storytelling, and a celebration of world photography. It presents documentary stories made by young photographers from around the globe. The issues matter to them, the perspectives are theirs. They are our visual interpreters.
The role of press photographers is all too often restricted to that of illustrators rather than interpreters. Issues are presented from a Western-European point of view. New Stories counteracts this by inviting ten photographers to shoot stories. in their own countries.
World Press Photo wanted to give the photographers the time and freedom to work outside the confines of a normal editorial assignment, so there was no brief. Instead, the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals were used as inspiration at the start of a creative journey. The goals' universality meant they were ideally suited to this project. We had no preconceived idea of the stories we wanted to see. Our aim was to encourage the photographers in the exploration of different ways of representing their world, to engage with and throw new light upon the subjects they had chosen to photograph. We asked Adrian Evans, director of Panos Pictures, to help guide the photographers towards their own goals, and to edit their stories.

The photographers are all former participants in World Press Photo training programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. These programs and workshops — set up ten years ago — are aimed at people whose access to training is limited, at filling gaps in conventional journalistic education. They form one of our core objectives and are part of an ongoing concern with education that dates back to 1990, one which saw the establishment of the Joop Swart Masterclass in 1994. Such activities are very much in line with our mission to promote the highest standards in photojournalism, and to foster international understanding through the medium.
This book is both an extension of the practice of these programs and an expansion of their spirit, and we are extremely proud of the result.
