In this illustrated account, historian Martine Gosselink sketches New York's Dutch years from 1609 to 1664. In her narrative, the city's inhabitants step off the pages, from the first Muslim, a kosher butcher, the first black landowner and the first prostitute. Photographs, maps and illustrations bring to life the New York of then and now. The National Archive preserves our society's collective memory, with over 6,000 archives from Dutch elected bodies, ministries, and national figures and institutions, plus millions of photographs and hundreds of thousands of maps, all adding up to some 110 kilometres of documents. |
