Kumadori makeup usually consists of stripes of bright colors or designs on a white background, the colors and patterns symbolizing aspects of the actor's personality. Bright red stripes indicate a role of powerful hero. The most famous of these roles, and the one who has come to represent the stereotype of kabuki in the West, is the hero of the play Shibaraku. Red symbolizes virtue and power. The bad guys are often depicted with a black beard, purple veins and dark blue eyebrows in the shape of antlers. Blue makeup can represent a ghost, spirit or other magical creature, depending on the pattern. Kitsune such as Genkurō in Yoshitsune Senbon-sakura wears blue makeup. Blue represents negative emotions like jealousy or fear; ghosts in traditional Japanese drama are often trapped by their attachment to such emotions. Gray and brown are sometimes used, especially when they represent animals, oni [demons], youkai [monsters] or anything else inhuman.
