The books which are available are written by Americans who chiefly pre-suppose that readers are already skilled in metalwork and possess elaborate or expensive equipment. THE AMATEUR JEWELLER fills the gap that exists, and is written by an author who although he has had no professional training, works in silver and gold, cuts and polishes his own gemstones, has his own Hall-mark, and can sell all the pieces of jewellery he makes. This is mentioned to encourage those who mistakenly believe that the design and construction of simple modern jewellery is beyond their capabilities. In jewellery making there are four simple basic operations- sawing, filing, silver soldering, and finishing (polishing). The reader of this book is taken through those operations in easy stages and with numerous illustrations amplifying the text: tools, their names and uses; the techniques of silver soldering; Hall-marking, why and where; polishing and finishing; plus numerous designs. To begin with, equipment need not be extensive or expensive. A few good hand tools and silver soldering equipment are the main requirements for the making of simple jewellery in copper and silver. As experience is gained so the tool kit will tend to grow and the scope of the hobby will extend. |
